MESSAGE FROM DG MARLA STANKUS
Dear Lions, Lioness, and Leos,
I hope you found yourself in the company of friends and family during the Christmas
and New Year celebrations. I hope you cherish the memories you made during the season
and always have your memories to fall back on over the years. I want to thank everyone that
attended the District Christmas Party. I had a great time and think most of those present
enjoyed their selves. I felt the food was great and plentiful. The Harpist, Haley did a
wonderful job playing for us during the evening. I want to thank everyone who sent me cards,
greetings, holiday wishes, gifts and those that attended the party. I’m sorry the room was a
bit small but we had such a great turn out. We were able to keep the cost of the dinner down.
Originally when booking the party the new Hog Fathers was to be open in the plaza next door
to the hotel where he was going to have a banquet room, however that plan was changed and
now the building has been sold to a company that will not have a Hog Fathers in it.
As many of you have heard my speech that I truly am a BELIEVER. I BELIEVE that you
can do whatever you BELIEVE you can do. On Thursday before New Year’s my husband and I
went to Lancaster to move his brother out of his apartment to a temporary location till we can
get him back home. We arrived there shortly after lunch. Within 15 minutes of arriving. I got
busy and started in to his kitchen, empting cupboards. About two hours later I called the
paper and put an ad in the next day for a moving sale on Friday starting at 11:00 am. Needless
to say no one believed that I could be ready for a sale by the next day. I did not have much
help other than how are you going to do this, you’ll never get it done. I just kept saying
BELIEVE in me, just trust me. Needless to say no one BELIEVED in me, except me. By the
next day I was ready for the sale. I sent my husband to put up signs throughout the complex
and just as he put up the last sign, security showed up and said someone reported him for
putting up signs and you are not allowed to put up signs in the complex. Needless to say he
was even more distraught as he took the signs back down. He said, “How will anyone find
us?” I told him I would handle it. I bought some balloons the night before and I tied them up
on the balcony with Moving Sale wrote on them. At 11:00 when the sale started, people
started to show up. We had a successful day. We got rid of a lot of stuff and made a little
money. If I would have taken the attitude that I’m not going to be able to do this, I would not
have accomplished anything…but I BELIEVED… and when you BELIEVE in yourself you can
accomplish anything. After the sale then we made many trips to Goodwill, donated to some of
the neighbors. I fell a little behind schedule because I planned on leaving by noon on
Saturday and we didn’t get out until 3:45. The only thing left in the apartment was some big
furniture all in the living room for a pick up on Tuesday. If each of you can BELIEVE in your
heart that you can bring in at least one new member, then go out and ask people you know to
join you to see what Lions are all about. I BELIEVE that we could get a lot of new members.
So I would like each of you to start BELIEVING in yourself and ask someone to attend your
next meeting with you. I BELIEVE if you do this you will become a BELIEVER and you will
have broken the ice and will have the confidence to ask someone else. Let’s see what our
District can do. Our membership is down and now is the time to start working on it.
I BELIEVE in
Courage, Commitment and Action
And
I BELIEVE in each one of YOU!
BELIEVE in YOURSELF!

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG ERIC DOLFI
Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos,
As you probably expected, I am somewhat in mourning over the Pittsburgh Steelers’
loss to the Denver Broncos, but I will get over it soon (maybe). In any case, there is no need
to send condolences. I will be very busy over the next few months.
To begin, I would like to tell everyone about a great gentleman who works for me at the
funeral home. His name is Galen Winebrenner and he is the minister at the United Christian
Temple in Uniontown. Reverend Galen drives the hearse for the funeral home and has a once
in a lifetime opportunity to go to Guatemala on February 11, 2012 for 15 days. Galen will
accompany his daughter who is the chief resident at Ruby Memorial Hospital and three other
doctors. The doctors will be performing various medical procedures while there.
Reverend Winebrenner told me that they will also be fitting glasses and providing hats
for youth and elderly people in remote villages. They will provide other sight related services
as well, depending on each doctor’s specialties. Galen’s daughter is in pediatrics. With that
being said I am making you aware of this to let you know if you have any slightly used hats,
they will take them with them to distribute through their journey. Also, they will be taking lots
of pictures and would like to include the Lions clubs in District 14-M. You can also give a
monetary gift to the group and they will see that it is used in the far reaches with
documentation of those that are helped and how they were helped. Galen is willing to do a
newspaper article. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me and I will
give Galen your contact information.
There is a lot to talk about this month. I would like to first let you know that if your club
would like me to install your officers, I would appreciate it if you would contact me as early as
possible. This year the International Convention is early and Lion Stacey and I will be leaving
on the 16th of June. Second, if your club has a particular date in mind for next year’s DG visit,
please let me know because I would like to post a tentative schedule of visits by the April
newsletter. Third, I am starting to put my District Cabinet together. If you are interested in
serving as a leader in our District, please let PDG Gloria, our GLT Coordinator, or me know.
I would also like to remind you to begin planning for your upcoming election of club
officers for 2012 – 2013. Your nominating committee should be searching now for qualified
members to serve so that you can conduct your elections by April 15th and report your new
officers no later than May 15th. I will include more information about that in upcoming
messages.
And finally, some of you have asked about our trip to Leader Dog in Rochester,
Michigan. I am happy to announce that we will be doing that on Thursday and Friday, March
8-9, 2012. Early, Thursday morning, we will board a motor coach at The Thomas M. Dolfi
Funeral Home (plenty of free parking is available) in Uniontown and travel to the Greek Town
Casino in Detroit, Michigan where overnight accommodations have been made. The following
morning we are scheduled to leave the casino and head to Rochester (Leader Dog). We will
arrive at Leader Dog and tour the facilities. Details are not fully finalized with Leader Dog but
will be announced. We will leave Leader Dog on Friday and come home that night with a stop
on the way to eat (optional). The bus line will allow you stay at the casino, instead of going toLeader Dog (non-lions) and pick you up on the return trip. The cost of this trip is $139.00 a
person based on double occupancy. You will receive $30 back in free play. Space is very
limited, so please contact me immediately if interested. Call 724-437-4561 or email
lionericd@yahoo.com. Checks may be made payable to Eric Dolfi. District 14-M has the first
chance to go. I will be opening this up to Lions in the surrounding areas on the first of
February.
Yours in Lionism
First VDG Eric

District 14-M Calendars
Don’t forget about our District calendar Project. If every Lion And Lioness in our
District would be responsible for ONE calendar, we would not have enough to supply the
entire membership. Please consider taking and being responsible for one calendar. Also
please send in your money along with the calendar stubs to our District Calendar
Chairperson, Paul Smith soon to keep the funds available for the winners. If you have unsoldcalendars, please contact other clubs to see if they have a need for them. If your club cannot
sell them please return ASAP to the calendar chairperson.

2012 APPLICATION
PA LIONS ALL STATE BAND
Dear Band Directors, former, present or future Pennsylvania Lions All-State Band Members:
For many years the Lions of Pennsylvania have organized an All-State Band to accompany the
PA Lions to the annual State and International Conventions. Although the Band will not
accompany the Lions to the 2012 International Convention in Korea, the Lions are organizing
an 80 member band to perform for the 2012 State Convention to be held in Gettysburg, PA on
May 18 and 19. The State Convention will involve one overnight. The band will rehearse Friday
evening at Gettysburg High School and the over-night will be at the Courtyard Marriott. On
Saturday, May 19 the band will present two concerts at the Wyndham Gettysburg. The Lions
will pay all the meal and lodging expenses for the Convention. Students need only to provide
transportation to and from Gettysburg. Schedule is as follows: Registration, Friday May 18 at
5:30 p.m.; concert Saturday morning 11:00 a.m.; and 2nd concert 5:30 p.m. and leaving
Gettysburg, Saturday May 19 at 7:00 p.m.
If you are a former member of the band, you will recall the fun times that you had, not to
mention the rewarding musical experience that you received by working with the different
directors. If you are a “first-timer” you can look forward to an exciting time! If you are
interested in applying, do so as soon as possible because we are limited to an 80 member
band.
The Lions All-State Band wears a light weight marching/concert uniform for all performances.
Students will be provided with a PA Lions shirt and a cummerbund and sash as part of the
uniform. You will however, need to supply the following items: white slacks/trousers, white
shoes and white socks, and a music stand.
Sincerely,
Ray Barfield, PA Lions All State Band Committee Chairperson

* PENNSYLVANIA LIONS DISTRICT 14-M
ATTENTION ALL LIONS CLUBS IN DISTRICT 14-M
As chairman of the District 14-M Environmental and Drug Awareness Program, I am
again asking each club in our district to sponsor a school and conduct a “Drug Awareness
Poster Contest”.
The Poster Contest is a unique way to further our goal to increase the knowledge of our youth
in regards to the harms of drug use and abuse. This knowledge can and will help to curb
a national disaster ... that of misuse of legal and illegal drugs.
Drug Abuse is everywhere ... in our larger cities and yes, even in our rural
communities!
Lions International has been involved with Drug Awareness since 1983.
Through research, it has been shown that young people must be reached before their
Middle School Years. This is a very startling and scary realization ... that at the ages of 10, 11,
& 12, harmful and even fatal substances are available to our youth!
Won’t you please participate in this contest by following the following rules.
DRUG AWARENESS POSTER CONTEST RULES
1. All Public, Private and Parochial Schools should be contacted and made aware that they are
eligible to participate in this contest.
2. This contest is open to all students in grades 4, 5 and 6 only.
3. The contest may be held on either the Club, Zone or Region level, and prizes should be
awarded at their discretion.
4. Posters must be on standard 22” X 28” POSTER BOARD and may be done in any of thefollowing media: [a] crayon, [b] paint, [c] marker, [d] pencil, [e] cut paper, etc.
ABSOLUTELY NO PILLS OR CAPSULES ARE TO BE USED!
5. Please make sure that the Student’s Name, Social Security Number, Phone Number,
Grade & School are printed clearly on the back of each poster along with the Teacher’s
Name. The posters forwarded to the District for judging must also include the Sponsoring
Club’s Name.
6. Each club should submit only a First, Second and Third Place Winner from each school to
the district for judging no later than SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2012 to be eligible for the
contest.
Posters must be sent to: Lion Robert R. Rossi, 42 Carroll Way, Monongahela, Pa. 15063.
7. The District will award the following prizes:
One [1] First Place Winner - $500.00 Savings Bond
One [1] Second Place Winner - $250.00 Savings Bond
One [1] Third Place Winner - $100.00 Savings Bond
One [1] Honorable Mention - $ 50.00 Savings Bond
8. District Winners and their families will be honored during the MODEL LUNCHEON at the
DISTRICT CONVENTION in the GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL on SATURDAY, MAY 5,
2012.
All posters forwarded to the District may be picked-up at that time by the sponsoring clubs.
Thank you in advance for your participation in this very worthwhile project.

2012 Pennsylvania Lions State Convention
Gettysburg, PA. May 17th thru 20th
Welcome to 2012. The Pennsylvania Lions State Convention will be here before you know it.
The 14-C committee has a very full schedule for you in Gettysburg and we hope that you are
planning to attend. The registration packets are in the mail to the clubs and you should
already have them or you will by the middle of January. Look them over and sign up for the
meals and events that you want to attend.
The Eisenhower farm tour will leave the information center at 9:30 AM on Friday and will be
back at the center at 11:30 AM. The information center is only 10 minutes from the Hotel so
you can make the 12:00 lunch to hear our speaker, Pennsylvania’s own Past President Joseph
Wroblewski.
The Thursday night Ghost tour will start downtown at Nesbit tours right after it gets dark. The
tours last about 1 ½ Hrs and the special pins included in the $10.00 price are pictured above.
The ladies get the White Ghost and the men get the Grey Ghost. The walking tour covers
about 6 to 7 blocks. When you return, the hospitality rooms will be open for your enjoyment.
Don’t miss this opportunity to have some fun, if you don’t sign up for this one, you will just
have to listen to the story and not be part of it.
On Saturday, the Ladies/Lioness breakfast will start at 7:00 AM, The Presidents meet the
President will be at 9:00 AM followed by a great presentation on (Everything I know about
Lions I learned at the Zoo) by PCC Terry Goodman of New Hampshire. The Pennsylvania Lions
All-State Band will perform at noon. Ladonna Gatlin will be next from 1:30 to 3:00. Then the
All-State Band will play for an hour before the Banquet which starts with a social hour at 6:00
and dinner at 7:00.One last thing, the tables for the Banquet are for 10 instead of 8 that I
mentioned in the last
Newsletter. No problem, all you need is one more couple to fill you table. The tables are extra
large so you will have plenty of room.
When you get the registration form, please fill it out and be sure to sign up for each event and
meal that you want to attend then send it in with your payment. The reason for this is easy.
Gettysburg College graduation is also the same weekend and after our deadline we cannot
guarantee you a room.
See you in Gettysburg.

Vice Chairman Larry Bare PDG

LEADER DOG
Once, Teddy was a 6-week-old fuzzy bundle of boundless energy. But this month he'll
spend his first holiday in training to be somebody's miracle... a guide dog who will be the
eyes for someone who is blind or visually impaired. As a superbly trained Leader Dog,
Teddy will allow his partner to navigate busy city streets and travel safely. He'll also be a
faithful, loving companion.
Together, the two will form a bond unlike any other. We can't
imagine a better holiday present!
As we enter into the last few weeks of 2011, many of you will
consider making end-of-year donations to various organizations.
Please consider helping Leader Dogs for the Blind with a generous
year-end gift—and help train a puppy to become someone's
miracle.
Make your gift count even more—double or even triple your gift
with a matching gift!
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions
made by their employees. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, visit
leaderdog.org/matchinggifts.

Highlights of the New York LDUN program include presentations from President Tam, UN
speakers and the unveiling of the 2011-12 Lions International Peace Poster Contest winner. A

allotted on a first come, first serve basis.
To learn more about this event, please direct Lions and guests to the Lions Day with the UN
