CLUB NEWS – DECEMBER 2011
REGION 1 – RC PEG BLAIR

ZONE A – ZC TOM HAVRILAK
Burgettstown: 5 members – Report received and will be addressed.
Hickory: 39 members – Traditionally, our club meets one time during December, which is our
Christmas Party and Gift Auction. Auctioneer, Michael Stritzinger, donates his time for the auction,
which generated $706 for the Club. Long-time Lion, Halden (Bud) Taggert, passed away late in
November. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
McDonald: 29 members - Held only one meeting this month. It was a Christmas Party that was
attended by the Midway Area Lions Club. We also collected and turned in 730 pair of glasses for
Lions International.
Midway Area: 15 members – NO REPORT
Washington Lions Club: 35 members – No change in membership. Held Christmas party for
members and quests. Sold Koeze nuts for a fund raiser.
Washington & Jefferson College: 14 members – NO REPORT
ZONE B – ZC KAY LASKODY
Carmichaels: 28 members – Annual Coal Bowl Basketball Tournament held December 27 and 28.
Four high school basketball teams were invited to play for our annual fund raiser. Geibel High School
won the championship game and to have our traveling trophy in their school for the year. Gift
certificates, a television, and a lease for a car were donated by local businesses and individuals as
prizes for making basketball shots. The gift certificates and television were won by 2 lucky
participates. Ten Lions participated in the 2 day activity. We had our Christmas party at the Fairdale
inn in Carmichaels and had 40 people attend.
Clarksville: 11 members – 12-13-2011 Meeting with ZC Kay and RC Peg, discussed any problems
with Club. All money due is paid.
Mt. Morris Area: 29 members – NO REPORT
Waynesburg: 52 members: Welcomed 1 New Member Susan J. Toner sponsored by Lion Kay
Laskody. Honored B & G of the month for November 2011. Attended Waynesburg Christmas Parade
on December 3, 2011. Attended Christmas Party on December 4, 2011 (7 attended). Had Christmas
Party for Waynesburg Club on December 15, 2011. Attended Clarksville meeting on December 13,
2011, ZC Kay & RC Peg.
West Greene Area: 25 members - West Greene Lions Club received a Light Box from a couple in
our area and the Challenge became who needed the box and what was it used for. We donated it to
the Washington/Greene Association of the Blind. We found out by asking and the Technician of the
Blind Association that they needed 1 more to make a total of 6 which was needed to help teach basic
visual skills. Thanks to all who fulfilled their need.
REGION TWO – RC JAMES OTT
ZONE A – GLORIA SCHMALZ
Bentleyville: 29 members – Sponsor Leo club; sponsor Boy Scouts; and sponsor Lioness Cub; 12
members attended District Christmas party at Holiday Inn, Bentleyville; planted 10 more trees, giving
us a total of 30 trees planted thus far; donated a $25 gift card to a person that helped build the
Halloween parade float; donated $50 to P.O.C.A for the school spring musical; 1 member delivers
meals on wheels for the senior center; ongoing sale of brooms, mops, mints and garbage bags;
Donated four $35 gift cards to persons in need at Christmas; with the help of Santa Claus. The

members made up and delivered 12 gift boxes to residents at the Mental Health Association for
Christmas as one of our club’s projects, and DG Marla inducted 2 new members.
Eighty Four: 17 members – NO REPORT
Greater Canonsburg: 22 members - ONGOING INKJET RECYCLING PROJECT, 3 members serving
library(100 hrs);1 member serving township(10 hrs), 5 members serving local churches (70 hrs), 1 member
serving Washington Literacy council teaching (50 hrs).
McMurray: 22 members – Club Calendar Ticket for month of November – Selling District Calendars,
Broom Sales, Koeze Nut Sales and Citrus Fruit Sales in progress. Paid ½ of balances left after all
other payments were made for cataract surgery for a community member. Had request for assistance
for glasses for kindergarten student. A local optical firm has agreed to donate the exam and glasses
at no charge. Planning club Christmas party.
Scenery Hill: 22 members - Sold Brooms & Garbage Bags
ZONE B – ZC CARL JACKSON
Charleroi: 19 members – Sold coloring books and Koeze nuts, and had a Christmas Party
Fayette City Washington Township Lions: 43 members – The Club sponsored Light up Night for
Washington Township and had Santa pass out treat to all the Children. Donated $1,000 to the Center
on the Hill Senior Center. Held a Pizza Party for the children and Santa accepted all the children's
lists and presented each with a gift from the Club. Donated treat bags to: Cub Scouts 42 treats, Food
Pantry 60 treats for all children 12 and under, St. Sebastian pre school class 30 treats. Passed out
treats to Children passing at the intersection of Route 201 and Fayette Street.
Monongahela Donora Area: 29 members - sponsor MCRS Leo Club. Ongoing Sales: brooms,
nuts, and garbage bags within local establishments in the communities. Ongoing collection of
eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, cell phones, and ink cartridges/toner for recycling. Collection
boxes are at over 20 locations within both communities. December 3, 2011 held 2nd Annual Pancake
Breakfast with Santa. 12 MCRS Leos assisted with the event. Club Secretary submitted “Serving
Together” application with photo to LCI. *received letter and patch 12/14/11.December 4, 2011 - 6
members attended the District 14M Christmas Party. December 4, 2011 - 10 trees were planted at
secretary’s residence. December 5, 2011- Presented Peace Poster winners on local level Wal-Mart
gift cards. 1st place-$25, 2nd Place-$15, , and 3rd Place-$10 .The 1st and 2nd place winners, along with
their family were in attendance. One of the parents present, who is a teacher at Madonna Catholic,
accepted the 3rd place winner’s gift from the club. December 11, 2011 - turned in 10 ink cartridges for
recycling. Made a donation to the Donora Food Bank for Christmas. Local website now up and
running: www.mondonlions.org An article was submitted to the Union Finley Messenger and to the
Mon Valley Messenger on the clubs accomplishments in 2011 with the hopes of recruiting new
members. Club approved ordering the MCRS Leo’s Gavel, Gong, and Banner. All bills were
presented and approved for payment.
Roscoe:29 members – Club held breakfast with Santa. Children under 12 were free. Served Meal on
Wheels. Helped at Food Pantry. Sold Brooms. Collected and distributed used eye glasses.
REGION THREE – RC SAM TRUXEL
ZONE A – BRAD GEYER

Bullskin Twp: 51 members – We donated $250 to the local Salvation Army. We visited three local
Nursing homes for Christmas. Along with cub scouts from our sponsored pack 164, we sang carols
and passed out gifts to all the residents. Two members went to WalMart on December 17th to help
the Caring for Children project they were there to help children buy needed clothing items. We held
our Christmas party at Brady’s Restaurant with 47 members and guests in attendance.
Connellsville: 42 members- NO REPORT .
Dawson-Vanderbilt: 20 members-NO REPORT .
Dunbar Twp: 16 members –NO REPORT
Indian Creek Valley: 34 members - Held Ladies’ Night Christmas Dinner at Oakhurst.
Perryopolis: 16 members - NO REPORT
Pleasant Valley: 27 members - Visited local personal care home taking personal items and a fleece
throw for each resident. Participated in the “Caring for Children” Project on the 17th of December.Purchased clothing for 21 needy elementary aged school children by working closely with the St.
Vincent DePaul Society. Ongoing collection of used eyeglasses. Selling trash can liners and dish
cloths. Happy New Year to ALL in our District
REGION FOUR – RC MARK FORD
ZONE A – JAMES HERCICK
BCR: 25 members – This is the first time in years all members were able to attend a meeting
together due to health, school, or work conflicts!!! Sold first Penguins raffle ticket. Winner sold by
Dave Shultz. Santa and members visited Beth Center Elementary Classrooms. Santa and members
visited 2 area nursing homes with Beth Center Leo Club delivered fruit baskets sang Christmas
Carols and visited residents. 3 members attended Cabinet Christmas Party (Mark, Linda, and
Amanda). First VDG Eric Presented Melvin Jones Fellowship to member Janet Sholock at December
meeting. 3 members formally inducted into BCR LIONS Club (Melissa, Dillon, and Brad).3 Members
visited Binnstown Lowhill Lions Club (Tom, Sue, and Mark) .1 Member visited Fayette City
Washington Township Lions Club. Mark assisted Beth Center Leo Club with food drive at
Elementary Middle and High Schools. Second Penguins raffle tickets are distributed for the Hit Date
January 20, 2012. Happy New Year to All!! .Next meeting JANUARY 17, 2012.
Binnstown-Lowhill: 22 members – NO REPORT
California University of PA: 12 members – Dues collected and prep work for next semester.
Grindstone: 33 members –NO REPORT
Republic: 22 members – NO REPORT
Old Trails: 23 members – Ringing bells for Salvation Army, gave $350.00 toward Fayette Blind
Association van, Club Christmas party will be 12-13. Eye Glass collection and Broom Sales.
ZONE B – ZC JAMES (BUTCH) FLEMMING
Ft. Necessity: 15 members – NO REPORT
Point Marion: 11 members – The club is selling Brooms and District Calendars.
Smithfield: 19 members – NO REPORT
Uniontown: 37 members – Rang bells for Salvation Army. Had Christmas meeting/gathering at
Beechwood Court Nursing Home. Had gifts, snacks, cookies, and treats for residents. Santa and
elves distributed gifts and led singing! Also had our Christmas Party/Angel Tree Gathering at Calvary
Church in Uniontown. We provided food and drinks for the kids and their families. It was a great time,
and everyone really seemed to be in the holiday spirit. Held a successful Koeze Nut sale.
REGION FIVE – RC PAUL SMITH
ZONE A – ZC/DR. TONI BOTTI
Berlin: 54 members –NO REPORT
Confluence: 42 members – The Club distributed 17 Christmas food baskets and 37 fruit baskets to
needy individuals and families in our area. Cost: $929.00
Laurel Hill: 15 members – NO REPORT
Meyersdale: 37 members - $450 in donations approved for Lions International, State and District
projects. Donations made to Meyersdale Fire Department $200 and Meyersdale Historical Center
$100. Annual Christmas Dinner attended by 27 Lions and guests at Morguen Toole Company. Club
distributed $500 in Christmas Gifts to local Golden Living Center residents. High school students
assisted Lions in distributing gifts.
Salisbury: 26 members - Christmas party.
Somerset: 37 members –NO REPORT
ZONE B – ZC ROBIN STEMPLE
Boswell: 16 members –The Club held a Christmas party on Dec. 6th with members, family and
friends. Helped 2 people with eye glasses. Turned in 30 pair of used eye glasses. The Club is
working with the Somerset Area Agency on Aging office to help a lady with a stair lift.
Connumach: 58 members – DG Marla visited our club with the Lions and Lioness on Monday
November 21. Club donated $500.00 to a local man whose house was damaged by a fire. There
wasn’t any insurance coverage. Our Lioness club donated $250.00. We also requested a grant from
District 14-M Disaster fund. Connumach Lions club purchased a $30.00 Distract calendar. PDG

Berton Shaffer presented Lion Glenn Lehman with the PA Counselors Award, 100% Secretary
awards to Lion Wayne Lehman and Lioness Ruby Lehman. A MJF presented to Lioness Shirley
Degory. 100% District Patch to Lon & Lioness Club and 100% PA Lions Award to the Lion and
Lioness Club for 2010-2011 year. Donated $100.00 to the Somerset Children’s Aide Society.
Resubmitted a PA Counselor Award Application. Held our Christmas Party on December 19th at Beka
House with 55 Lions, Lioness and Guest in attendance. The entertainment was a Chalk artist. Our
community Calendar project netted a profit of $1771.25. Currently working on our Christmas Fruit
Basket fundraiser, packing them on Sunday the 17th of December . one lion made 1129 bows(24
man-hours)
Hooversville: 31 members – NO REPORT
Shade: 11 members – NO REPORT
Sipesville: 7 members – Broom sale.
Stoystown: 48 members - Christmas party was held on December 8. Blind Center is selling fruit
baskets.
LIONESS CLUBS
ELAINE HEINZ, COORDINATOR
Bentleyville Lioness: 44 members – NO REPORT
Bullskin Twp. Lioness: 22 members – Gave $50.00 to Connellsville Community Ministries for the
Food Pantry. Did shopping for a family of three for Christmas at a cost of $150.90. Had a Chinese
auction within the club and made $100.00 and donated that to the Salvation Army of Connellsville.
Helped with the Caring for Children Program: Held Dec 17, 2010 At Wal-Mart in Connellsville. Sold
$9821.95 worth of Koeze Nuts With a profit of $3244.03. Ongoing sales of: Garbage Bags, Rada
Knives, Cookies Pans
Connumach Lioness: 23 members – Newsletter prepared. Held a basket party. Donated $250.00 to
a member of the Community whose house had a fire.
Dunbar Twp. Lioness: 20 members – NO REPORT
Hickory Lioness: 6 members – Charitable donations will be distributed
McDonald Lioness: 12 members – Donated $100.00 to our local Saint Vincent De Paul Society for
Christmas gift. Four members helped at Meals–on-Wheels. Held our Christmas party with Lioness
Elaine Heinz, Lioness Coordinator and her mother, President of Bentleyville Lioness Club as guests.
Stoystown Lioness Club: 19 members – Gave 3 gas cards to 3 families who have a member in
PGH Hospital ongoing to PGH for treatments. Provided Christmas for 3 families- bought an outfit and
fun item for children. Gave gift card to parents (food or anything needed). Made 20 cookie trays for
shut ins. Attended Lions Christmas party
LEO CLUBS
SARA GREENLEE, COORDINATOR
Bentleyville Leo Club: 90 members – 4 Leos set up the Bentleyville Social Hall for Mrs. Claus Club
Night which is an organization that provides wigs for Cancer patients. 7 Leos helped pass out
presents at Mrs. Claus Night. 12 Leos conducted a tag day for wreaths across America where we
collected $154.00. 6 Leos Christmas Caroled in Scenery Hill for Christmas open house. 20 Leos
donated 46 rolls of paper towels for the Church of the Covenant's food pantry.
Berlin Leo Club: 26 members – Sixteen LEO Club members helped wrap presents for those who
purchased Christmas gifts from the Christmas Bazaar. The wrapping service was free and everyone
was welcome. Two LEO members tallied the spirit clothing items and sent the order in to the clothing
company. When the items were delivered from the clothing company to the school, five LEOS helped
separate each order and call those who ordered them as Christmas presents. The clothing fundraiser
rose over 700 dollars for the LEO Club. The fundraiser went smoothly from start to finish. Two LEO
members are preparing us to sell angels for the Women’s Help Center. We are pleased to say we
recruited one new member this month.
Beth Center Leo Club: 72 members - 23 members volunteered for the Leo Club Swim ‘N Gym on
December 2nd. All proceeds of $520 will go to the Relay for Life. 7 members collected items around
Bethlehem-Center School District for the food drive that was held December 5th through the 9th. Atotal of 3,338 units of food were collected from the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. 3 members
went Christmas caroling on December 22nd at two local nursing homes with 10 BCR Lions Club
members. The club donated $200.00 to the Washington City Mission. The Leo Club President
continues to attend the Bethlehem-Center School Board Meetings to discuss the club’s agenda. The
Leo Club continues to collect bottle caps to assist a local sick child with medical transport expenses.
Discussed planting trees around Bethlehem-Center School Campus as part of the International Lions
Project, “Plant A Million Trees.” Received approval from School Administration for this beautification
project which is to be completed in the spring. Club members met on December 6th and December
20th to discuss agenda. The club plans to meet on January 3rd and January 17th.The club plans to
hold a, “Mr. BCHS,” pageant at the Bethlehem-Center High School auditorium in the spring. Received
approval from School Administration and all proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Brownsville Leo Club: 28 members – NO REPORT.
California Leo Club: 45 members – NO REPORT.
Charleroi Leo Club: 15 members – NO REPORT.
Chartiers-Houston Leo Club: 46 members –NO REPORT.
Eager Eagles Leo Club: 8 members – Charter was just received – formal Charter Night TBA.

M.C.R.S.: 37 members – 13 of our Leos served lunch to our students 100% of our Leos
representing Madonna Catholic made decorations and decorated the Christmas tree in Chess Park.
100% of our Leos collected food for the St. Damien Food Bank and Soup Kitchen
O.D.C.S. Crusader Leo Club: 10 members - NO REPORT.
